What
is Brain Injury?
Brain
injury is a leading cause of death and disability. These injuries
often result in a variety of physical, cognitive, and social/emotional
impairments. Falls are the most common cause of brain injuries,
followed by motor vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, assaults,
etc. Most of these incidents are preventable or their impact can
be greatly reduced. Brain injuries can also be caused by events
like strokes, tumours and aneurisms.
Brain
injury: An epidemic
Severe
brain injuries usually result in a period of coma. Long-term effects
may include intellectual impairment, speech problems, behavioral
disorders and physical disabilities. The injured individual and
the family face a period of adjustment and rehabilitation.
Concussions
and severe whiplash can cause minor brain injury, with symptoms
such as headaches, poor memory, dizziness, irritability, sleep disturbance,
fatigue or depression, and changes in behavior. These symptoms can
have a significant impact on job, school and family life.
